Camila Giorgi achieved her biggest career success last year when she won her maiden WTA 1000 trophy. The Italian generally played a rather good year, especially towards the end of the year but this year it’s been an absolute disaster. She’s 2-4 on the year her only two wins coming back in January at the Australian Open.
Before that, it was four straight losses for Giorgi who is a very polarizing player to watch. When her tennis is right she’s brilliant but when it’s wrong then it’s terrible. She’s capable of beating anybody and she can also lose to anybody.
Clay is a surface familiar to her and she’s had success on it but generally, she plays better on hard courts. She picked up some good form in the Billie Jean King Cup scoring some wins there so she will try to keep that going in Stuttgart.

Paolini Looking For a Breakthrough
Jasmine Paolini had a very good year in 2021 and the Italian established herself as a pretty strong top 100 player. Her goal is to obviously progress even further and while she doesn’t have the tool to reach the top of the game she can certainly become a very strong player.
So far this year it’s mostly been a lack of consistency for her as she was unable to create any deep runs at events. She’s 8-9 on the year with some solid tennis overall in the past month. She played in Miami but lost early, she then played in Charleston and lost to Jessica Pegula.
Overall it’s been a bit disappointing as she is still waiting on that big break. Perhaps it will come with the tour shifting to clay. It’s been her strongest surface so far in her career.
Giorgi v Paolini Prediction and Tip
While these two have played for Italy together in the past they never played against each other. It’s an interesting matchup between two players who both like to attack. Giorgi hits the ball much harder but she is also prone to making more mistakes than Paolini.
The shorter Paolini generally has the better clay game and has performed better on the surface in past seasons. She will certainly miss the outdoor type of the clay-court as indoors in Stuttgart, Giorgi could do some major damage. It will basically come down to which Giorgi shows up.
If the good shows up she will win, if not she will lose. I think it’s going to three either way. They know each other well and we might see a long one. If I had to pick the winner, I’ll pick Paolini to score the upset.
