Coco Gauff v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Gauff won their only meeting in Rome last year, but it wasn’t an easy one as the Kazakh player pushed her to three sets before going down fighting.

Gauff Sends Schmiedlova Packing

World no. 16 Coco Gauff recorded her first win in Madrid as she ousted Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the first round on Thursday. The 18-year-old American, who had lost in the first round on her debut last year, needed just 61 minutes to dispatch the Slovakian qualifier.

Gauff barely put a foot wrong in the match, winning the first eight games, before Schmiedlová finally won a game. Gauff allowed the World No. 89 to win just one more service game as she took the contest 6-0, 6-2.

Gauff served five aces and won 77% of the first serve points. She saved all three of the break points that she faced and converted five of six to improve her season record to 11-8.

The two-time tour-level champion was a semifinalist in Adelaide-2 and a quarterfinalist in Doha. Last year, she had a terrific run on clay, finishing with a 16-4 record on the surface, which included the Emilia-Romagna Open title, a semifinal finish at the Italian Open, a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open (her first at a major) and a quarterfinal finish in Charleston.

Madrid was the only place where she flopped. But having tasted her first success in the Spanish capital she will now be hoping for a deep run.

Putintseva Edges Past Rogers

World no. 44 Yulia Putintseva edged past Shelby Rogers in a two-hour first round contest on Thursday.

The Kazakh player was outaced 0-6 by the World no. 48, but she converted five of 12 break points and saved five of eight to advance with a 7-5, 7-5 victory.

With the win, Putintseva improved her season record to 11-7 and she is 6-2 on clay, having recently reached the semifinals in Istanbul.

A three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Putintseva has a 59% win record on clay, and both her WTA titles have come on the surface.

She won the Nuremberg Open in 2019 and the Budapest Open last year. Her best in Madrid was a third round finish in 2019, but she hadn’t won a first round match in the other three appearances. Thursday’s win will therefore be a huge confidence booster for Putintseva.

Gauff v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

This should be good contest between two solid clay court players. Three sets seem imminent with Gauff advancing.
