Amanda Anisimova v Petra Martic Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two. Anisimova won in Cincinnati in 2018, while Martic won in Charleston in 2019.

Anisimova Extends Perfect Record Against Sabalenka

In-form Amanda Anisimova extended her lead over Aryna Sabalenka to 4-0 as she defeated the Belarusian for the second time this month.

Anisimova had beaten Sabalenka in the Round of 16 in Charleston, where she went as far as the semifinals. On Thursday, she defeated the third seed in the opening round of the Madrid Open. Just like her win Charleston two weeks ago, Anisimova needed three sets to send the World No. 4 packing.

Anisimova converted five of 12 break points and saved three of six in the match. Overall, the American won 88 points in the match, just three more than her opponent to take the contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in an hour and 57 minutes.

Following the win, the 20-year-old is 15-6 this season, which includes a title success at the Melbourne Summer Set 2. It was her second tour-level trophy, following her title success in Bogota (on clay) in 2019.

The 2019 French Open semifinalist is a decent player on clay and having recorded her first win in Madrid, she will look to build on that start.

Martic Marches Into Second Round

Qualifier Petra Martic won her third match in three days to march into the second round in Miami. The World No. 58 defeated World No. 26 Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets in the first round on Thursday.

In a tough first set, both players exchanged three breaks each forcing the tiebreak. Martic saved a set point at 5-6 in the tiebreak and then won the next two points to take the first set in an hour and 10 minutes.

With the first set in the bag, it was all one-way traffic in the second set as Martic closed the contest 7-6 (8–6), 6-1. The win followed her two qualifying round wins over the previous two days. Martic had beaten Dalma Gálfi 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the first qualifying round on Tuesday and then made the main draw with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucia Bronzetti.

The win improved Martic to 7-5 in the main draws this year. She was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells and most recently lost in the second round in Istanbul.

Martic, who has a 55% win record on clay, won her only tour title in Istanbul in 2019 and was also a finalist in Bucharest in 2018. Her best in Madrid was a last eight finish in 2019. Can she go that far this year as well?
