Lorenzo Sonego v Jack Draper Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Sonego and Draper in the lead-up to this first round encounter in Madrid.

Clay-Lover Sonego Underwhelming This Season

It’s not as if Sonego’s 6-5 win-loss record on clay this season is any different from his overall one on this surface with the Italian having won 36 and lost 32 of the matches on it.

However, for a player ranked 27th in the world, Sonego would have loved to do a lot better than he has so far in 2022.

His best performance for the season on red dirt came at Buenos Aires where he won back to back matches following a first round bye to reach the semifinals. But in the four other tournaments he has featured in on clay, Sonego has failed to repeat that showing.

In fact he has done better on hard court surfaces as far as best performances are concerned, winning successive matches in a couple of tournaments.

Sonego has a good chance to kick-start this tournament with a dominating win that could dictate his confidence for the rest of this competition here.

Draper Enjoying Solid Success at Lower Levels

Draper has earned himself a wild-card for this tournament and if his performances in the season are any indicator, that is a well-deserved one.

The Brit has featured in six Challenger tournaments on indoor courts and registered a whopping three title victories already this season. So much so, he has climbed up from where he was at the start of the season, ranked 265th on the ATP charts to his current ranking of 124th in the world.

Where Draper could face a bit of a challenge is the shift to clay which is difficult for most players but more so for someone who has never played a main draw ATP match on this surface.

He had featured in the Rome Challenger last week where Draper fell in the second round to Giulio Zeppieri despite entering the encounter as 2/5 favourite to win it.

Can Draper recreate the same success in his main draw clay court debut?

Sonego v Draper Prediction and Tip

Sonego is an overwhelming favourite at 1/3 against the debutant and we are backing him to come through. Can he do that in straight sets is the question.

Tip: Sonego to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
