Borna Coric v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

There have been seven previous instances of these two having faced off against each other and Bautista-Agut narrowly leads the head to head 4-3.

On clay, however, the Spaniard has won all of their three outings. Those came in the period between 2015 and 2016.

Coric Struggling after Return

He was ranked 12th in the world at one point not so long ago but Coric’s return to tennis following injury and other fitness concerns hasn’t been the best.

This year, for instance, the Croat has won just one of the five matches he has played so far. His only win came against Fernando Verdasco in Miami and that was followed by three successive losses.

While one might argue that two of those defeats were to far superior opponents – even at his prime, Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner would have started out as favourites in all probability – Coric would be particularly worried by his result in the Challenger tournament in Rome earlier this week.

Coric fell to the 19-year-old Flavio Cobolli in the first round of that tournament after taking the first set.

Can he turn things around against a far superior opponent in this opener?

In-Form Bautista Agut Opens Clay Campaign

Bautista Agut is 16-6 for the year but hasn’t yet played on clay in 2022. The challenge, therefore, for the Spaniard will be to carry his solid form forward on to red dirt as he takes to court against an underwhelming Coric.

The Spaniard had won four of his five matches at the ATP Cup and then went on to win the Doha Open title to kick-start his season.

His showing at both, Indian Wells and Miami could have been a lot better than the third round exits he endured but given his overall that shouldn’t bog him down too much.

Overall, Bautista Agut has a 85-59 record on clay, which might not be as good as his showing on other surfaces, but should be enough to take care of his struggling opening round opponent.

Coric v Bautista Agut Prediction and Tip

Bautista Agut might not have played an ATP match on clay this year but has done enough otherwise to start off a heavy favourite here. Expect him to come away a winner.
