Tsitsipas is 4-0 against Khachanov, with all their previous meetings taking place on hard courts.

Tsitsipas Saves Two MPs to Down Dimitrov

After scoring easy straight set wins over Grigor Dimitrov in Barcelona and Madrid, Stefanos Tsitsipas ousted the Bulgarian once again, this time in Rome on Wednesday, to advance to the third round of the tournament.

But this time the win over Dimitrov was anything but easy. The World No. 5 won the first set, and was a break up in the second, which saw him take a 3-5 lead. But he couldn’t close out the match as Dimitrov rebounded in the contest, winning four consecutive games to force the decider.

Neither player was broken in the third set, but Dimitrov held two match points on Tsitsipas’ serve in the 10th and 12th games. The Greek saved both and then dominated the tiebreak to win the two hour and 38 minute contest 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4).

With the win the 23-year-old improved his season record to 28-9. He has been in terrific form on clay recently, winning the title in Monte-Carlo, reaching the quarterfinals in Barcelona and the  semifinals in Madrid. He will be looking to build on the winning start in Rome.

Khachanov Edges Past Carreno Busta

World no. 24 Karen Khachanov stopped a comeback bid from Pablo Carreno Busta to advance into the third round on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Russian saved seven of nine break points and converted three of four to win the two-hour-and-five-minute contest 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. The win follows a 6-3, 6-4 drubbing of Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri in the first round.

Wednesday’s win improved the Russian’s season record to 14-11. He was a finalist in Adelaide-1 at the start of the season and was a semifinalist in Doha and Belgrade.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist had gone past the first round of the Italian Open just once before. He has now equalled his previous best of third round. It will be interesting to see if he can keep the winning momentum going on Thursday, but he faces an opponent he has never beaten before.

Tsitsipas v Khachanov Prediction and Tip
