Marin Cilic came back from a set down to oust Cameron Norrie in the second round in Rome on Wednesday to move into the Round of 16 for the sixth time in the tournament.
The Croatian, who had beaten Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 6-1, 6-4 in the first round, served nine aces, won 79% points on the first serve, converted half of 10 break points and saved one of three to beat Norrie 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in two hours and six minutes.
The 2018 semifinalist is now a win away from a fourth quarterfinal in Rome.
It has been a good season for the 33-year-old Croat, who improved to 13-10 in 2022. He was a semifinalist in the two Adelaide tournaments and a quarterfinalist in Doha. This is the first time since the Australian Open that he has registered consecutive wins and will be looking to win a third in a row on Thursday.

Garin Marches On
Cristian Garin marched into the third round of the Rome Masters for the first time in his third attempt.
The Chilean, who had begun his campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Italy’s Francesco Passaro on Sunday, knocked out Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round on Tuesday.
Garin was supposed to meet Carlos Alcaraz in the second round, but the Spaniard pulled out of the tournament, allowing the Finn to not only make the main draw as a lucky loser but also to receive a first round bye.
Garin, however, ended Ruusuvuori’s lucky run with a 6-4, 6-4 win in an hour and 46 minutes.
The second-round win over a tough opponent would have been a huge confidence booster for the 25-year-old, who was a semifinalist in Houston but has struggled in the other tournaments.
Cilic v Garin Prediction and Tip
Cilic on clay isn’t seen as a huge threat, while the surface has brought the best out of the Chilean in the past. But given the Croatian’s experience, his current form and also his record in Rome, Garin may find it tough to make the quarters. Expect Cilic to win in three.
