Mertens Advances As Osorio Retires

Elise Mertens moved into the second round after her opening round opponent Camila Osorio retired in the third set of the match.

The 24th seed Mertens had begun with a break of serve but the Colombian won the next six games to take the first set. Table turned in the second set as it was the Belgian, who came back from a break down before breaking Osorio thrice and forcing the third set.

In the third Mertens had gone up 4-2 when Osorio retired with an injury.

This is the fourth time in her fifth Wimbledon, when Mertens has advanced to the second round of the tournament. The World No. 31 improved to 15-13 this year. She had won just one of her four matches on grass leading up to Wimbledon, but was happy with her performance on Monday, which ended a three-match losing streak.

Udvardy Knocks Out Zidansek

Hungary’s Panna Udvardy earned her first win at a Grand Slam as she knocked out Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek in the first round on Monday.

Making her debut at Wimbledon, the World no. 100 fell a break behind early and was trailing 2-4 in the first set, when she embarked on a four-game win streak to take the first set.

After both traded an early break in the second set, Zidansek broke again to take a 4-5 lead, but the Hungarian prevented the World no. 60 from serving out the set in the next game. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which was dominated by the 23-year-old Udvardy, who clinched the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) in an hour and 26 minutes.

While Udvardy hit 17 winners and 24 unforced errors her opponent hot 16 winners and 35 unforced errors.

It has been a very tough year for the Hungarian, who had won just seven of her 26 matches, across levels, leading up to Wimbledon this year. She also doesn’t have a lot of experience playing on grass courts, and so the first round win against a good player would have done her confidence a world of good.

Mertens v Udvardy Prediction and Tip

Mertens is the more experienced player and she will be the favourite in this match. She has reached at least the third round in her last 17 Grand Slam appearances, a series which began with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open in 2018. She should keep that streak going with a win on Wednesday.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
