Rybakina Stops Andreescu

Elena Rybakina ended Bianca Andreescu’s run with a straight sets win over the Canadian in the second round on Thursday.

The 17th seed Kazakh got the lone break of the first set in the 10th game. She also went a break up twice in the second set, but the World No. 56 broke back on both the occasions, forcing the tiebreak. Rybakina edged Andreescu in the tiebreak to register a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory in an hour and 39 minutes.

Ranked No. 23, the 23-year-old Rybakina is playing at Wimbledon for the second time. She had made it to the Round of 16 on her debut last year.

This year, Rybakina didn’t come into the tournament in good form, having won just one of her three matches on grass. But she has looked good in the two matches at the major, beginning with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 victory over CoCO Vandeweghe in the opening round.

She will be hoping to reach a consecutive fourth round in the tournament with a win on Saturday.

Zheng Demolishes Minnen

Greet Minnen had pulled off a shock first round upset over ninth seed Garbine Muguruza, but she couldn’t keep the winning run going in the next round after she was handed a straight sets drubbing by China’s Qinwen Zheng.

Zheng hit 24 winners, including 8 aces and made just 12 unforced errors during a comprehensive 6-4, 6-1 win over the Belgian.

The 19-year-old Chinese was broken just once in the match, that after she had raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set. But she quickly recovered to take the firs set and then broke her opponent thrice in the second set to complete the win in an hour and 15 minutes.

The World no. 52 had won her opening round match against Sloane Stephens, beating the American 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 for her first ever win on grass.

It’s been a very good year for the Chinese, who is making her Wimbledon debut. She also made her Australian and French Open debuts this year, reaching the second round in the former and fourth round in the latter. Can she reach back-to-back Grand Slam Round of 16?
