Pegula Rallies Past Dart

Having reached the quarterfinals of the previous two Grand Slams this year, Jessica Pegula continued her march towards a third as she came back from a set down to beat Britain’s Harriet Dart.

The win over the local hope on Thursday allowed her to move into the third round of the grass court major for the first time in her career.

Pegula, who was also a finalist at the Madrid Open and a semifinalist in Miami, improved her season record to 25-11.

The match started with both players breaking each other in the first two games, but soon Dart built a sizeable lead by breaking Pegula two more times. The American pulled a break back but couldn’t break again in the set to allow Dart take a one-set lead.

The eighth seed fought her way back into the contest. She raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set and then didn’t lose a service game to force the decider.

Pegula was extremely dominant in the third, breaking her opponent four times, while dropping serve just once to win the contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Ranked no. 9 in the world, Pegula had beaten Donna Vekic 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the opening round. Having reached the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in her third try, she will now be hoping to keep building on the start that she has got.

Martic Powers Past Kucova

Petra Martic struck 10 aces during a solid second-round display to halt Kristína Kučová in the Round of 64 for the third time in her three main draw appearances.

The World No. 80 Martic, who had knocked out Shelby Rogers 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the first round, has now reached the third round for the fourth time at Wimbledon, with her best being two Round of 16 finishes in 2017 and 2019.

The Croatian was stretched by Kucova in the first set, needing over an hour to claim the set in the tiebreak after both had exchanged a break early. Martic dominated the tiebreak though getting three mini-breaks against the Slovak’s one.

Martic dropped her first service game in the second, but responded quickly by winning four games in a row. She eventually won the match by breaking the World No. 91 for a third time in the second set.

Overall Martic won 85% first serve points, struck 33 winners and made 28 unforced errors to Kucova’s 20 winners and 31 unforced errors. She was sharp on the net as well, winning 16 of 19 net points.

Having started off the grass season with back-to-back first-round exits, the two wins would have done her confidence a world of good. She will make things difficult for the eighth seed in the third round.

Pegula v Martic Prediction and Tip

Pegula has displayed excellent form so far this year and she will be looking to keep surging ahead. Martic, who has a better record on grass, will ask a few difficult questions along the way but the American should edge past the Croat to move into he fourth round.
