Jack Sock v Jason Kubler Head to Head

The pair have met once before in a final back on the Futures tour in 2012, Sock winning in straight sets.

Sock Showing Signs of Old Form

Sock, after several years in the doldrums, is showing glimpses of the player who was once ranked five in the world, and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon six years ago.

After coming through the qualifying competition, he had beaten fellow qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round in straight sets.

Fellow American Maxime Cressy, the world number 46, represented a step up in class of opponent in the second round,  but Sock started well, breaking Cressy and then saving two break back points to take the first set.

But men had break opportunities in the second set, but it was Sock who converted one of those to find himself two sets to the good, before rain brought a premature end to Thursday’s play.

The rest seemed to benefit Cressy more than Sock as he broke twice in succession in the third set. Sock recovered one of them, but not the other.

When Sock was broken at the start of the fourth set, it looked like he as about to throw away his advantage. But he stayed in the match, and broke back, only to drop his serve again.

He rallied once more, though, broke back and forced a tie-break, which he dominated to the extent that Cressy only won a single more point.

Kubler Ends His Long Third Round Wait

Kubler, who has seen his career blighted by injuries, has finally made it to the third round of Wimbledon, four years after his previous time in the main draw ended in a first round defeat.

But after knocking out the British number 29 seed Dan Evans in the first round, he met the qualifier Dennis Novak of Slovakia, the world number 153, in a match that eventually stretched over two days.

One break of serve midway through the first set was enough for the Australian to claim it.

And then another break or serve at the start of the second put Kubler in control of the match.

Kubler dropped his own serve for the first time early in the third set, but broke back straight away, and then broke again.

With Kubler on the verge of serving for the match, the rain started to fall and play eventually had to be abandoned for the day on the outside courts.

When they returned on Friday, though, he served out to love to complete his long awaited passage into the third round.

Sock v Kubler Prediction and Tip

Neither man would have been expected to get this far, but both men will want to continue their run. It could be close, but Sock’s greater experience might just give him the edge.
