Botic van de Zandschulp v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head
They played twice and Botic won on grass while Fokina won on clay.

Botic van de Zandschulp played some of his best tennis this year on clay. It’s not by chance as the Dutch player mostly played on that surface on the Challenger Tour.
He moves very well on it and can do a lot of damage with his serve and forehand. He is 11-6 on clay this year and that’s by far his best score on all the surfaces. He played a final on the surface as well in Munich but retired from the match due to breathing problems.
He should be fairly strong in Hamburg because the surface does reward players who are aggressive. Botic is certainly that but it’s a very tricky test in Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard bested him on the surface last year at Roland Garros. The form on grass has been pretty decent for him with a 4th round exit against Nadal.
He’ll be glad about a return to clay with a solid chance to do some damage in Hamburg. A tricky start but once he passed earlier this year on grass.
Fokina’s Shaky Bastad Experience
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina played in Bastad last week but he won only one match there before bowing out against Sebastian Baez. The match against Baez was not bad but the Argentine proved clearly better and in control of the match for huge stretches of it.
Fokina had his typical issue of not being to produce a consistent enough level that was not winner-error over and over again. That’s the biggest problem for him because when he plays consistently he can play as well as he did in Monte-Carlo.
Such outings are rather rare for him which is why his score this year is only 16-18. He’s far too talented to post such a poor result overall but it’s been bad for him lately.
Out of form completely with a return to clay that was okay at best. A new chance comes in Hamburg but the opponent is a very hard one. One that has beaten him before so Fokina will need to give his best if he hopes to avoid an early exit.
van de Zandschulp v Fokina Prediction and Tip
So this is a very interesting matchup indeed because both of these players can win. I expect a solid outing from Botic which is pretty standard for him and I have no idea what will happen with Fokina. His best can easily beat Botic but I’m unsure we’ll see it.
He was far from it in Bastad and if he produces a similar outing he’ll get beaten here. I think he won’t be consistent enough so I’ll back the Dutch player to get it done.
