Karen Khachanov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

They played five times before and Khachanov leads 3-2. Most recent one came in Hamburg in 2020 with Khachanov winning 2-1.

Khachanov Back From Vacation

The last match Karen Khachanov played was in Halle precisely a month ago. Since then, the Russian has been largely relaxing as he was unable to play at Wimbledon. His return comes on clay in Hamburg where he played pretty decent in the past.

Clay is not his best surface but he is far from bad on it. That’s the best thing about Khachanov. He is fairly solid on all surfaces as his game can work on all of them. 8-6 is the record on clay this year with 22-16 in total. A pretty decent score for the Russian whose talent is larger than that but things never worked out properly.

Hamburg has been a decent place for him in the past as he was able to win some matches here. He beat his opponent here in 2020 in three sets and he might need to dig up some footage from that match to understand the game plan.

His forehand will need to be sharp as well as his serve. He needs to move well which might be a problem after not playing for a month but he can certainly do it.

Struff 5-0 on clay

Jan-Lennard Struff did not play the clay season at all until after Wimbledon and his return to it has been pretty strong. His score is 5-0 and is it was a Challenger but he defeated some solid players in that run. Overall it’s been a bad year for Struff with an 8-13 score but recent weeks have been positive.

The injuries are finally behind him and he’s looking much better now. The serve is working, the groundstrokes are there, volleying is in fashion again and generally, he is getting back to top 100 shape. Struff fell out of it being ranked 123rd at the moment so he is in need of some wins.

The organizers in Hamburg did him a solid with a wild card so he did not have to play qualifiers. Struff is really capable on clay and historically it might be his best surface. He will be very motivated in this one and after some strong showings lately, it would be quite foolish to doubt he could not win.

He came fairly close in 2020 pushing Khachanov to three sets.

Khachanov v Struff Prediction and Tip

On one side we have a fairly rusty Khachanov who did not play in a month. It’s safe to assume he won’t be at peak form in this while Struff might be playing his best tennis of the season. Actually I’m quite certain of it.

He’ll be home and he needs points desperately after dropping out of the top 100. I’ll back Struff here simply because tennis is such a momentum game and I don’t know what kind of Khachanov will show up after no month of action.

Tip: Struff to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
