Tomova has a 3-0 record against the Belgian.

Zanevska on a Five-Match Skid

Maryna Zanevska has not won a singles match since beating Harmony Tan in Strasbourg in May. The 28-year-old Belgian lost to Karolina Pliskova in the last eight in Strasbourg and then suffered first round defeats at Roland Garros, Berlin, Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

The World no. 62, who has a played a lot on clay over her professional career, is 5-4 on the surface this year, which includes a semifinal appearance in the WTA 125 in Saint Malo. That performance along with her run in Strasbourg have been her best displays in 2022, which has otherwise seen more disappointments than successes.

Last July, Zanevska produced her best ever tour level result, winning her maiden title in Gdynia. She was also semifinalist in Lausanne last July.

While she has struggled in singles this season, she along with partner Kimberley Zimmermann reached the quarterfinals of the French Open this season.

Seeded seventh in Hamburg, it will be interesting to see if she can end her five-match losing streak and get back to winning ways.

Tomova In Decent Touch

Facing Zanevska is World No. 101 Viktoriya Tomova. Unlike the Belgian, the Bulgarian has been in decent form this season

Although most of Tomova’s wins have come at the lower-level tournaments in 2022, a 30-22 season record across levels is impressive by her standards.

Most recently Tomova was in action at the WTA 125 in Bastad last week, reaching the semifinals before falling to South Korea’s Su Jeong Jang.

Tomova’s best tour-level result this season was a quarterfinal finish in Eastbourne, where she had entered the main draw as a lucky loser. At the ITF level, she reached a clay court final for the 15th time, but couldn’t add to her previous eight titles on the surface, falling to Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Oeiras Ladies Open (Overall, Tomova has won 16 of 24 ITF finals).

With a 16-11 clay court record across levels in 2022, Tomova will be a slight favourite going into Monday’s opening round.

Zanevska v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Tomova’s current form gives her the edge in this contest. Expect the Bulgarian to advance to the second round.
