Hibino Rebounds to Down Hartono

World No. 259 Nao Hibino will be playing just her third tour-level main draw match of the season, after the two-time tour-level champion qualified for the Hamburg Open.

The Japanese player rallied from a set down to defeat the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono in a two-hour-and-12-minute contest on Sunday to make it to the main draw.

The 27-year-old Hibino was outplayed in the first set by the Dutch player but she came back in the second, breaking Hartono in the first game of the set, to eventually force the decider.

In the third, both players broke each other thrice to take it into the tiebreak. Hibino dominated the tiebreak and sealed the second qualifying round contest 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Hibino had beaten Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure in the opening qualifying round.

While Hibino is 0-2 in the main draw at the tour-level this year, she did reach her first ITF final in four years, finishing runner-up in Chiang Rai.

The Japanese player has lots of experience playing on hard courts, but when it comes to clay, she has a 34-40 career record across levels.

Cadantu-Ignatik Rallies Past Friedsam

World No. 172 Alexandra Cadantu-Ignatik, too, came back after losing the first set in the second qualifying round to oust Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam on Sunday.

In a match that lasted three hours and 39 minutes, the Romanian saved a match point on her serve in the final set before winning 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Cadantu-Ignatik had beaten Germany’s Ella Seidel in straight sets in the first qualifying round. This will be her first tour-level appearance of the season.

The 32-year-old, who has played most of her matches on clay, across levels, has a career record of 410-246 on the surface. Her only final on the tour, came on hard court in Monterrey in 2012, where she finished runner-up.

Cadantu-Ignatik won her 11th ITF title in Sharm El Sheikh in February this year. She also made it to two other ITF finals.

Hibino v Cadantu-Ignatik Prediction and Tip

Cadantu-Ignatik will be a bit tired after her marathon on Sunday. Will that have a bearing on her first round match against Hibino? It will be interesting to see. The Japanese has never won against the Romanian and she may struggle to win again.
