In-form Anastasia Potapova reached the second round of the Hamburg Open with a straight sets win over sixth seed Varvara Gracheva on Monday.

Both players exchanged three breaks each in the first seven games of the match, but it was the World No. 63 Potapova, who got the decisive fourth break in the 11th game to take the opening set.

The second set too saw both players exchange an early break, but it was Potapova who finished in a hurry, winning the last four games of the set to beat the fellow Russian 7-5, 6-3.

The 21-year-old Russian is aiming to reach a second consecutive quarterfinal. She had made it to the semifinals in Lausanne last week.

Potapova improved to 17-6 (across levels) on clay in 2022 and that includes her maiden WTA title in Istanbul.

Carle Edges Past Lys

Qualifier Maria Carle got her first tour-level win of the season as she edged past Germany’s Eva Lys in a three-set opening round contest on Monday.

The 22-year-old got the only break of the first set in the 11th game to gain a one-set advantage, but the German wild card came back in the second, breaking the Argentine three times in teh set. While Carle came back from a break down twice, she couldn’t get the third one back as Lys took the match into the final set.

Carle, ranked No. 189 in the world, was dominant from the start of the third set. She broke the German twice on her way to a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory in two hours and 30 minutes.

The Argentine had beaten Sophie Chang in straight sets in the first qualifying round and had needed three sets to beat the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens in the second qualifying round.

Monday’s win improved Carle’s season record to 38-21. The nine-time ITF champion is 26-13 on clay and won her fifth title on clay in Pelham in May. Can she make the quarterfinals?
