Anett Kontaveit v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

Kontaveit holds a 2-0 lead, last beating Peterson in the 2021 WTA Cluj-Napoca semifinal in straight sets.

Kontaveit, Out of Form

World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit started the 2022 season on a blazing note with a title run in St. Petersburg and a runner-up feat in the Qatar Open.

In these two tournaments, the Estonian posted some big wins over the likes of Maria Sakkari, Jelena Ostapenko, Belinda Bencic, and Ons Jabeur.

Her form, however, took a sharp drop thereafter. A litany of early exits in Miami and Indian Wells was followed by an uneventful clay swing – largely because of her contracting coronavirus and its subsequent toll on her health. Anett lost her opening-round bouts in Rome and the French Open, following which she split with her coach Dmitry Tursunov.

Her recovery wasn’t complete and as a result, she also skipped the entirety of the grass swing barring the Wimbledon – where she fell in round two to Jule Niemeier.

A month later, she is now in Hamburg, looking fit and confident. Her opening-round win over Irina Bara with 6-3, 7-6(3) was reminiscent of the remarkable momentum that took her to the top three.

That said, only time will tell how fit she truly is.

Peterson Dispatches Baindl

Currently ranked World No. 93, Rebecca Peterson had a good start to the tournament as she dispatched Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 6-0.

With this, she has now improved her tally to 15-11. Her overall year hasn’t been that consistent and is not nearly half as impressive as Kontaveit’s.

Peterson last competed in Budapest, where she lost to Laura Pigossi, then #125, in straight sets. She incurred similar early defeats in Wimbledon and WTA Rabat – both those defeats coming to lower-ranked players like Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Petra Marcinko.

Most of Rebecca’s year has gone by like this, and the handful of wins she picked up came in qualifying/early rounds and low-tier events like ITF Wiesbaden and Bastad Challenger (both quarterfinal appearances).

Kontaveit v Peterson Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit is the favourite, all things considered. However, backing Peterson may not be the worst play to make – especially since her opponent is still finding her rhythm on the tour after a tryst with fitness concerns. Expect an entertaining match.
