Martinez’s Mental Block In Gstaad

Pedro Martinez was on the verge of beating Matteo Berrettini in Gstaad yet the Spaniard squandered a 5-1 lead in the 2nd set tiebreak which could have sealed his win. He did not recover from that losing the final set easily and crashing out in the quarterfinal.

It’s a bad result for Martinez who could have possibly played in the final instead of Berrettini and he’ll certainly remember that match for a while. We’ll see how it impacts him in Kitzbuhel when he gets a chance to redeem himself.

The Spaniard is having a solid year with a 19-19 score overall but he’s certainly capable of much more. Clay is his best surface by far and he’s still only 13-12. The Gstaad event should give him confidence moving forward but that Berrettini defeated will loom over his head for a while.

Going against Jarry, who is a similar player to the Italian also will present some issues.

Jarry Climbing Bit by Bit

Nicolas Jarry is very close to returning to the top 100 which was the goal when he started his comeback earlier this year. The Chilean player was once a pretty strong player overall, especially on clay where he dominated with his powerful serve.

A couple of years later it’s still the same playstyle and it still works rather well. He had a solid outing in Gstaad losing to Ramos in the quarterfinals and a wild card entry in Kitzbuhel will give him a chance to build upon that. Jarry has exclusively played on clay this year having a 29-14 record overall.

Kitzbuhel will give him a chance to play his game just like Gstaad did and he’s most dangerous when he can unleash that serve and forehand.

He can beat Martinez but it will take a strong effort because the Spaniard will force him to play long rallies and he doesn’t like to do that much.

Martinez v Jarry Prediction and Tip

Martinez is the more complete player overall and he should have the upper hand in this matchup. A lot will come down to how well Jarry serves and we might even see two tiebreaks.

I think the Spaniard has the tools necessary it just comes down to how much that Berrettini loss shook him. I think he’ll be fine and win albeit in a very close contest.
