A title at Doha and a finalist at the ATP Cup earlier this year were a part of a strong start to the season for Bautista Agut. But those results came on hard court surfaces while the Spaniard also finished up a runner-up on the grass court of Mallorca.
On clay, things have been a tad different for the world number 20.
Bautista Agut featured at the Madrid Masters in what was his first clay court competition of the season and eased past Jenson Brooksby in his opener.
Since then, he has played and lost three matches on red dirt. Dan Evans squeaked past him in the second round in Madrid, while Dominic Thiem and Juan Pablo Varillas were winners at Bastad and Gstaad respectively.

Rodionov a Better Player Than Casanova
Before coming into this tournament, Rodionov had won just seven main draw matches in his career, including only one this season.
Which is why a first round victory over Hernan Casanova is exactly what he needed as he looks to get back to his career-best ranking of 125th in the world for starters.
And Rodionov will need to play as well as he did against Casanova if he wants to add to that meager tally. The Austrian had carved out a 6-4, 6-2 win against Casanova in a match lasting an hour and 22 minutes to reach the second round but the question is if Bautista Agut will allow him to play as well.
After all, it’s not often do you find a player finish an encounter with a first serve win percentage of 94%, something that Rodionov did in his opener.
