World No. 64 Andrea Petkovic will find herself in a demanding match when she takes on Clara Tauson.
The 34-year-old has had a muted season so far with 12-11 and a handful of quarterfinal runs to show for it. Her last tournament was in Hamburg, where she succumbed to Anett Kontaveit – retiring in the second round without winning a game.
That was the first tournament since January where Petkovic won at least two main-draw matches on the tour; in her last attempt too (WTA Melbourne), the former world number nine made it as far as the quarters.
Add to this equation her shoddy form on hard courts (only five of her 13 WTA career finals have come on this turf), it becomes all the more evident that Andrea is the underdog here.

Tauson, Coming off a Back Injury
19-year-old Clara Tauson was off to a promising start this season, reaching her career-best ranking at the #33 spot.
However, a back injury took her out of action as she went without a win (or many matches) from late March through to July. In fact, Clara participated in just three tournaments – Miami Open, Madrid Open, and Wimbledon – where she not-so-surprisingly lost in the first round.
But that was some time ago, and Tauson seems fit enough to confirm her participation in the Citi Open 2022.
Keeping her fitness concerns aside, the number eight seed is a hard-court specialist with three WTA finals to her name (all in 2021) and an impressive pedigree against the top 10 players.
Tauson v Petkovic Prediction and Tip
This match can swing either way – largely because of the gaps in the form of two players. Tauson is coming off a serious injury and will be mindful of her game. As for Petkovic is low on form, but her experience should help to move past the teenager.
Expect an entertaining match.
