Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic finds herself in a pickle as she kickstarts the US Open swing with hardly any form or momentum.
Having reached her career-best ranking at #40 in February, she has since dropped down to 73rd place on the back of lacklustre results.
Martincova is 11-17 so far and is on a five-match losing streak. Her last notable run came in Nottingham, where she was a semifinalist; the 27-year-old has since fallen in the opening rounds in Birmingham, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, and Prague. A few of these losses may be considered a bit surprising as they came at the hands of players like Katie Boulter and Chloe Paquet.
Tereza’s hard-court swing was comparatively better as she reached the third round in St. Petersburg and Doha. She was also a doubles runner-up in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Wang, in a Similar Boat
20-year-old Xinyu Wang is the current World No. 78 and is more than capable of delivering surprises.
Her tally is 14-15, although she has lost in the first round in four of her last five tournaments. Most of her current season has gone by in early exits, with most of those wins coming in the qualifying/opening matches.
That said, Wang’s high point of the season came in the La Bisbal D’emporda ITF event, where she bagged her fifth title on the circuit. Besides this, Xinyu was also a finalist in WTA Abierto Zapopan doubles with Zhu Lin.
Over the course of her career, the young Chinese has beaten players like Paula Badosa, Caroline Garcia, Jelena Ostapenko, and Barbora Krejcikova. Clearly, she will be confident of her chances when she takes on Martincova.

This match can swing either way. Wang makes for a good underdog bet, and so does Tereza – at least from backing a favourite perspective.
