Taylor Townsend v Storm Sanders Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Townsend on a Resurgent Path

Former World No. 61 Taylor Townsend has returned to the WTA Tour this year after long maternity leave.

The 26-year-old American has arrived in San Jose for the Silicon Valley Classic with a tally of 9-3 and a singles ranking of #316. She has taken things rather slowly and steadily in 2022, featuring in only four tournaments from April through to June.

Taylor has seen some success as she was a quarterfinalist in Palm Harbor and Charlottesville and won the title in Charleston.

However, the fact remains that she is low on form and momentum, and her hard-court rhythm may not be to the standards of the competitive field. She started as a qualifier in the tournament and beat Asia Muhammad and Emina Bektas to reach the main draw.

Townsend has a fair bit of doubles experience to leverage, spanning three WTA finals, four on the Challenger circuit, and 24 on the ITF.

Sanders, a Doubles Specialist

Australia’s Storm Sanders is the current doubles No. 20, singles No. 279. She is also in a similar boat as Townsend – except that she has played more tennis in 2022 and has a tally of 10-13.

Her singles journey has gone by in early-round/qualifying defeats, with her best run coming in the Miami Open, where she reached round two as a qualifier.

Sanders has had a better chance in the doubles department as she won the WTA 500 titles in Adelaide and Berlin – respectively with Ashleigh Barty and Katerina Siniakova.

Storm has a stronger pedigree than her American counterpart – but the fact remains that she has not fared that well on the singles circuit historically.

She also started from the qualifiers in San Jose and dispatched Alycia Parks and Caroline Dolehide in straight sets.

Sanders v Townsend Prediction and Tip

The match can go either way. Both players are coming off sloppy performances, but given Sanders’ more active season and the convincing start over the weekend, she has a slight edge in this fixture.

Tip: Sanders to Win, Over 20.5 Games: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
