Gael Monfils v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

Martinez won their only meeting at Wimbledon last year.

Monfils Back After a Three-Month Hiatus

World no. 20 Gael Monfils is making a return to the court after a gap of three months. A foot injury had forced him to pull out of a number of tournaments, including the French Open and Wimbledon, but the 35-year-old seems fit and raring to go at the Canadian Open.

Monfils had started the year brilliantly,  winning his 11th ATP title by beating Karen Khachanov in the Adelaide International final. He also made it to a second Australian Open quarterfinal before going down to Matteo Berrettini.

The Frenchman has an overall record of 12-6 this season but will be playing for the first time since losing to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Madrid Open.

He has an excellent record in Montreal but is yet to reach a final. His best results at the Canadian Open were semifinal finishes in 2016 and 2019. Last year, he lost in the quarterfinals to John Isner. It was the second time he lost in the last eight stage, having also exited that stage in 2011.

He will be looking to shake off the rust and get off to a flying start, recapturing his early season form that saw him go 11-5 on hard courts.

Martinez To Be Tested on Hard Courts

While Pedro Martinez has made progress as a clay court player at the top level, he still has a lot to prove on hard courts.

The Spaniard is 5-4 on hard courts this season and has an overall record of 14-16 on the surface.

The 25-year-old World no. 52 is coming off back-to-back quarterfinal performances, but both came on his preferred surface in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel.

This year he also picked up his maiden ATP title by beating Sebastian Baez in the Santiago final.

Martinez’s best on hard court this year was a third round finish in Miami. With Monfils coming bak after a while will Martinez sense an opportunity?

Monfils v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Monfils could be a bit rusty but he will still be the favourite to win it. Maybe he will be a bit slow off the blocks but should quickly find his rhythm and advance to the next round.

Tip: Monfils to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
