Jelena Ostapenko v Madison Keys Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Keys leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

She won their first two meetings at Birmingham in 2016, and at Charleston three years later. However, when the pair met again at Eastbourne in June, it was Ostapenko who won, although she benefited from Keys retiring injured on that occasion..

Ostapenko Beats Toronto Finalist

Ostapenko was handed a tough first round draw against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, a woman ranked just one place below her in the world, the Toronto finalist from last week, and a winner at Birmingham in June.

However, after saving early break points in the first set, it was she who found the inspiration when needed, converting the third set point opportunity on the Brazilian’s serve.

Haddad-Maia looked like she had found a way back into the match when she broke Ostapenko in the opening game of the second set. But the Latvian soon hit back to level, and then broke again to give her the chance to serve out for the match.

To the Brazilian’s credit, she immediately got the break but the reprieve proved to be only temporary, because she surrendered her serve again next game, and her match and tournament was over.

2019 Winner Keys Starts Confidently

Three years ago Keys achieved her best ever result in a WTA 1000 event by winning in Cincinnati, and she has hopes of another good run this year after making a confident start against Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, the world number 38, who, herself, had reached the last eight in Toronto last week.

The first set was largely dominated by serve until the eleventh game, when Putintseva offered up two break opportunities, the second of which Keys took, serving out next game.

And the American consolidated her position with a  break midway through the second set.

Putintseva failed to mount any sort of a comeback, and Keys broke her once more for good measure to wrap up the match.

Ostapenko v Keys Prediction and Tip

This should be a closely fought match, but the American may just have the edge, if only because she knows what it is like to lift the trophy in Cincinnati, and has the better head to head record into the bargain..

Tip: Keys to win: 7/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
