Aryna Sabalenka v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

Sabalenka leads 2-1. She won in Cincinnati and Beijing but lost in Zhuhai. All three of those meetings took place in 2018 and both of Sabalenka’s win came in three sets.

Sabalenka Halts Zhang

World No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka ended Zhang Shuai’s splendid run in the tournament with a straight sets win on Friday, which lifted the Belarusian into her first hard court semifinal since last year’s U.S. Open.

Broken by the Chinese player in the seventh game of the opening set, Sabalenka won the last three games to take the first set. In the second set, Sabalenka came back from a break down four times and then saved two break points at 5-5 before going on to dominate the tiebreak and seal the one hour and 49 minute contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Zhang had taken down Naomi Osaka and second seed Annett Kontaveit en route the quarterfinals but faltered at the last eight stage.

With the win Sabalenka has now improved to 24-16 for the season. It will be the fourth time she will be competing in a semifinal this year. She finished runner-up in Stuttgart and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and lost in the semifinals in Rome.

A 10-time winner on the tour, Sabalenka will feature in her second Cincy semifinal, following her final four finish in 2018. She would be hoping to reach an 18th WTA final on Saturday.

Garcia Marches On

In-form Caroline Garcia defeated Jessica Pegula on Friday to become the first qualifier to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati since Akgul Amanmuradova in 2007.

The Frenchwoman has improved to 22-4 since the start of the Bad Homburg Open, where she won her first WTA title in three years. She also went on to win the Poland Open to take her tally of WTA titles to 9 from 12 finals.

In the quarterfinal on Friday, Garcia wasn’t broken by the World No. 8, while she broke her opponent twice in the opening set and once in the second to advance to her fifth semifinal of the season.

The World No. 35 didn’t put a foot wrong in the match. She won 80% of first serve points and saved both the break points that she faced to register a convincing 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Garcia had qualified for the main draw with tough three-set wins over Diane Parry and Andrea Petkovic. She has been broken just three times in the main draws this week. Beginning her campaign with a straight sets win over Petra Martic, she needed three sets to see off World no. 3 and fourth seed Maria Sakkari and then scored another straight sets win to beat Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the Round of 16.

Having cruised past another solid player in the quarterfinals, she will be going into the semis with a lot of confidence behind her.

Sabalenka v Garcia Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka is the seeded player but given how Garcia has been playing recently, it won’t be a surprise if she takes down a third top 10 player in the tournament. The match may need a third set to separate the two.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
