Kwon Eases Past Altmaier

South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon began his Winston-Salem campaign with a straight sets win, knocking out Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in a one-hour-and-23-minute contest on Monday.

Kwon faced six break points in the match, and he saved all six of them. He had four opportunities to break the World No. 93, and he converted three of them for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Thanks to the win, Kwon improved to 14-18 for the season and won his first main draw match since Atlanta. The 24-year-old had lost in the first round in Washington and failed to qualify for Montreal and Cincinnati.

He has won plenty of first round matches this year, but hasn’t gone past the second round.

Can he win consecutive matches in Winston-Salem, where he went 1-1 on debut last year?

Kubler Comes Through Qualifiers

Jason Kubler qualified for the main draw and then received a first round bye. He will be beginning his maiden Winston-Salem campaign in the second round on Tuesday.

The World No. 116 saved 7 of 7 break points and converted 4 of 9 to beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in an hour and 39 minutes in the second qualifying round.

The Australian had won his first qualifying round against Inaki Montes-De La Torre, defeating the Spaniard 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 35 minutes.

The 29-year-old is 8-4 this year and he was at his best on grass this year. He went from qualifiers to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and then reached the semifinals in Newport.

Kubler has also done well in the lower level tournaments this year. He won two ITF titles on clay in Canberra and a Challenger title on hard in Little rock. He also finished runner-up in Orlando (on hard court).

Having made it to the second round, he will be looking to keep the impressive run going.
