Grigor Dimitrov v Steve Johnson Head to Head
This is an age-old rivalry that has seen eight iterations already. Dimitrov has a narrow 5-3 lead over Johnson.
This includes a first round loss at Wimbledon earlier this year for Dimitrov, when he retired from the encounter after being a set up.
On hard court surfaces, Dimitrov is 4-1 up.

Form has been an obvious concern for Dimitrov but more recently things haven’t looked very well for the Bulgarian even fitness-wise.
The 19th-ranked player had to retire from his Wimbledon opener against Johnson and a month or so on, he opted to call it quits from the first round of the Winston-Salem Open despite having dispatched Dominic Thiem 6-0 in the opening set.
This time around it looked like it had something to do with his breathing.
Speaking of form, Dimitrov enters this year’s US Open on the back of three successive defeats including that Thiem retirement. Since his third round exit at French Open, Dimitrov has won just three matches spread across six tournaments, losing six in the process.
Which is why he might have some difficulties here too.

Johnson Hoping to Put up a Strong Show
Once ranked 21st in the world, Johnson has fallen to outside of the top 100 at the moment. His performances during the US Open Series, however, should give him some hope and a possibility of Johnson rediscovering a place in the top 70 at the very worst.
Because while Johnson did not make it past the qualifiers at Cincinnati, there have been two tournaments, at Los Cabos and Winston-Salem where he has performed quite well.
At the former, he made it through to the quarterfinal where he fell to Felix Auger-Aliassime in a fighting match. And then at the latter, a couple of straight-set wins took him to the third round where Johnson lost to Richard Gasquet.

While Dimitrov is a 1/3 favourite to win this, Johnson will reckon he has a chance especially given his opponent’s form and fitness, along with the fact that the American did make it past him at Wimbledon (albeit because of a fitness issue).
