Playing in the final Grand Slam of her career, former world number one Serena Williams started her home major on a strong note with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Danka Kovinic.
Williams is looking to end her professional career on a high note by bagging the 24th Slam and matching Margaret Court’s all-time record.
It will be a tough ask for the 40-year-old, who hasn’t played a lot of singles competitive tennis in 2022. Serena has featured only in three tournaments: Wimbledon, Rogers Cup, and Cincinnati Open.
She lost in the first round in London and Cinci – respectively to Harmony Tan and Emma Raducnau, but in Toronto, she did reach round two before losing to Belinda Bencic.
Williams’ pedigree needs no introduction – she has 33 major finals to her name and another 40-odd WTA career finals. She may be low on momentum, but playing in New York, where she has an exceptional track record, anything can happen.

Kontaveit Routs Cristian
Anett Kontaveit is also off to a blazing start at the Flushing Meadows as she dispatched Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 6-0.
Now ranking World No. 2, it has been quite a season for the Estonian. She reached her career-best singles ranking inside the top five on the heels of three singles finals – a title run in St. Petersburg and runner-up feats in Qatar and Hamburg European Open.
Of late, however, Kontaveit has been a bit rusty as she couldn’t quite make it beyond the early rounds in Toronto and Cincinnati. The 26-year-old was subdued by the likes of Jil Teichmann and Shuai Zhang, which only raises concerns about her form heading into the US Open.

This one is for the books. Williams will do her best to keep the dream run going, and by the looks of Kontaveit’s recent rut, she may move into round three. However, it may not be an easy match for the home favourite American.
