Coric Survives a Five-Setter

Borna Coric staved off a determined comeback bid from French qualifier Enzo Couacaud to move into the second round of the U.S. Open on Monday.

Coric, who came into the tournament as the Cincinnati Masters champion, seemed to have picked off from where he left as he took the first set in no time. But things became a bit tight in the second with Couacaud raising his game and not getting broken in the set. Eventually Coric edged the tiebreak with a single minibreak to go two sets up.

But tables turned over the next two sets as the World No. 193 clawed his way back to tie the contest at two sets apiece.

In the final set, Couacaud broke early, but Coric drew level at 3-3. Then the Frenchman broke again and served for the match at 4-5, but the Croat broke him to love to stay alive. Coric won four games in a row to finish off the four hour and five minute contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Coric won a staggering 163 points, eight more than his opponent. He also struck 74 winners and made 81 unforced errors against the Frenchman’s 49 winners and 51 unforced errors.

The victory extended the World no. 29’s current streak to seven matches. The series of wins began in the first round in Cincinnati, where he beat some top players including Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Can the 2020 U.S. Open quarterfinalist iron out the errors in the next game?

Brooksby Eases Past Lajovic

Jenson Brooksby was at his best in the opening round against Dusan Lajovic on Tuesday and seemed to be charging towards the second round, when the Serb decided to retire in the third set.

The American, ranked no. 43 in the world, played a near-perfect match and won 14 games in a row, to take the contest 6-2, 6-0, 3-0 (ret).

Brooksby, who delivered his best result at the U.S. Open last year, when he reached the fourth round, dropped just 10 points on his serve and won 60% of the receiving points to storm into the next round.

The 21-year-old, who was a finalist in Dallas and Atlanta this year, improved his season record to 20-16. He will now be hoping to maintain the same level in the next round.

Coric v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Coric is enjoying a purple patch but is coming off a scrappy win. In contrast Brooksby was near-flawless in the opening round. Expect this to be a cracking contest. Coric will be a slight favourite but may have to sweat it out once again.
