Pablo Carreno Busta has traditionally played very good tennis in New York and US Open has been his best event for years. He hardly ever touched that level outside of this hard court so his comfortable win over a former champion here – Dominic Thiem, was not a surprise.
A minor slip-up in the 3rd set was not enough for Thiem to turn around the match as the Spaniard remained in control. He’s in really good form after his surprise triumph in Montreal and he kept in going in round one. It was not a perfect match, he served well but had no more unforced errors than winners.
It was that type of match with both players going for it and playing aggressively but that’s something he will need to eliminate moving forward. A 29-18 record on the year shows his progress this year and is certainly favoured to keep that going.
Especially against a player whom he bested three times in the past.

Bublik Downs Gaston
Alexander Bublik played a solid first match in New York beating Gaston. The Bublik attack overwhelmed the young French player from the baseline and he didn’t know how to handle it.
Over 50 winners for Bublik who did not waste any time and did not look to play long rallies either. Pretty standard stuff for him but he’ll need to be a bit more precise moving forward. Bublik has had an okay year so far but it’s nothing special.
A couple of thrown-away victories, some solid runs and the typical mercurial nature of his play. Up next for him is a player whom he never defeated before. They played three times and every time, Carreno Busta emerged victorious.
New York is a good spot to change that but he will need to bring a lot more consistency than he has so far, especially on the serve. It’s a major weapon for him but also one he could not count on too much in the past few weeks.
At least not in the way he usually can.

They played three times in the past and Bublik never won. It’s because he can’t outsmart Busta who keeps him in long rallies and gets on his nerves.
I don’t see that changing much in this one so take the Spaniard.
