Iga Swiatek v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

Swiatek leads 2-1 at the moment; they last met in the same round of the 2022 French Open, where the Pole prevailed comfortably with 6-3, 6-2.

Before that, they had met in the Miami Open semifinal back in April, where Iga won again in straight sets.

Iga Makes her QF Debut in New York

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is all set to compete in her first US Open quarterfinal. She has been competing in the tournament since 2019 and for her to make it this far in just her fourth attempt is quite a feat.

The 21-year-old has been in scintillating form this season. She arrived at the Flushing Meadows at the back of six singles titles, summarised by her record of 50-7. Her biggest hit is the French Open, alongside the WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Rome, and Doha.

Although she was beaten in the opening rounds in Toronto and Cincinnati by Beatriz Haddad Maia and Madison Keys, Swiatek has done well to move past that in NY.

Without dropping a set, she absolutely immediately dispatched her first three opponents – Jasmine Paolini, Sloane Stephens, and Lauren Davis.

In the round of 16, she faced some resistance from the German youngster Jule Niemeier. Swiatek went down a set but staged a strong comeback and took the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. It was also a bit uncharacteristic of Iga as she committed 31 unforced errors and managed just 19 winners.

Having reached the semifinal in the Australian Open this season, the Polish rising star will also fancy her chances of doing the same here.

Pegula, the Home Favourite

Although Jessica Pegula, current World No. 8, may not have had a glittering season like Swiatek’s, she has been highly consistent throughout the year.

Case in point, she is set to compete in her third Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season – and sixth one overall on the 2022 WTA Tour.

Most recently, she featured in the semifinal in Rogers Cup and the final eight in Cincinnati – so it is not really surprising to see her carry forward that momentum to her home tournament.

She made it to the quarters in style by knocking out the in-form Czech, former World No. 2 Petra Kvitova in straight sets with 6-3, 6-2. Before her, the 28-year-old had moved past Viktorija Golubic, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and Yuan Yue.

Pegula has also enjoyed a decent year on the doubles circuit with four titles and one runner-up feat. Her most recent title was the Canadian Open with Cori Gauff; she was also the French Open runner-up with her.

Jessica may not have a rich pedigree like Swiatek, but she is more experienced. Given that she is playing at home, she has a certain advantage too.

Expect a cracking affair.
