Jelena Ostapenko v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

The two players have quite a bit of rivalry going on between them. It is 4-2 to Alexandrova, although she won two of the matches following Ostapenko’s retirement from the game.

They last met in the Madrid Open 2022, where the second seed won in three sets.

Alexandrova in her Second Final of 2022

World No. 24 Ekaterina Alexandrova is set to compete in her fifth career WTA final. Irrespective of how the match turns out, she will reach her career-best ranking on Monday next week.

Her last final was the Rosmalen Championships, where she won the title by beating Aryna Sabalenka. Her other prominent season runs came in the Madrid Open (as a qualifier) and Charleston Open semifinals.

In both these tournaments, Ekaterina dispatched a handful of well-known players like Ostapenko, Karolina Pliskova, and Amanda Anisimova. At the same time, there have been a lot of instances where she couldn’t quite manage to move past the early rounds – including the ones in the US Open swing.

Here in Seoul, the 27-year-old Russian began with a three-set win over Asia Muhammad. Thereafter, she picked up the pace with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Na-Iae Han and then, 7-5, 7-6(8) over Lulu Sun.

In the semis, she tamed Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-4, to improve her tally to 31-16.

Ostapenko, in her Second Final in Seoul

Top seed Jelena Ostapenko has been impressive in Seoul as she looks to win the tournament for the second time in her career.

It hasn’t been easy as she found herself in a couple of three-setters against Boyoung Jeong and Anastasia Gasanova in the opening rounds. Things got easy in the quarters as Ostapenko beat the Andorran teenager Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva 6-2, 6-1.

In the semis, the 25-year-old Latvian moved past Emma Raducanu 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 (retired) as the Brit withdrew, citing fitness concerns in the final set.

Jelena is the current World No. 19 and has improved her tally to 29-15. She has racked up close to $1.5 million in prize money – largely from her four doubles finals and two singles finals in Dubai and Eastbourne.

She did struggle a bit in the US Open swing as she lost early in Toronto, Cinci, and New York. However, as the former #5 boasting a rich resume against the elites on the tour and enviable silverware, she is the clear favourite here.

Ostapenko v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko will fancy her chances, but Alexandrova has all the precedents she needs to carve the upset. Expect a close affair between the top two seeds.
