Davis Struggles Past Italian

Despite reaching the third round of the  US Open, Davis in in danger of losing her highly prized top 100 status, so a string of good results between now and the end of the season will all help towards her cause.

Certainly she began her campaign in Parma well enough with a hard fought victory over the Italian Sara Errani, the world number 109, who, at the age of 35, is approaching the veteran stage of her career.

Errani began the match on the back foot by dropping her opening service game, but then a sequence of three breaks in a row in the middle of the set enabled her to level.

Both players struggled to hold serve, but it was Errani who blinked first, dropped her serve once more, and Davis was able to take advantage and claim the set.

Break points continued to come and go in the second set, but Errani was the first to drop her serve.

However, play on both sides of the net became increasingly erratic, and suddenly holding serve became very difficult.

Finally, though, Davis held match point, but, even then she could not finish the job, and it took her three more before she was into the second round.

Sorribes Tormo Knocks Out Second Seed

Sorribes Tormo won the doubles in Istanbul in April, but her best result in singles in 2022 had also come on Italian soil, in Palermo, where she reached the semi-finals two months ago.

It did not take her long to make her mark in this tournament, though, knocking out the second seed, and local favourite Martine Trevisan, in their first round match in Tuesday.

The pair began the match by swapping early breaks, but then the Spaniard broke once more, and had two set points which Trevisan saved.

The Italian then broke back and the match was all square again, but only momentarily, because Sorribes-Tormo then broke her again, and went on to claim the ser.

That seemed to upset the Italian psychologically because she did not win another game after that.

Sorribes Tormo was able to cruise to victory in what had become a surprisingly one-sided contest.

Davis v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip
