After suffering back-to-back defeats in the fourth round of the U.S. Open and the second round in Metz, Daniil Medvedev seems to be back in his elements, as the second seed began his Astana Open campaign with a straight sets drubbing of Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round.
The World no. 4 set the tone right at the outset as he broke the Spaniard in the very first game. He never looked back from that point on and broke Ramos-Vinolas a second time in the last game to draw first blood. He was in the ascendency in the second set as well, and won five games in a row to finish off the set and the match 6-3, 6-1.
The one-hour-and-21-minute contest saw the Russian serve 8 aces and win 83% points on his first serve.
The 26-year-old hasn’t been as consistent as he would have liked this season and that’s one of the reasons, why he couldn’t hold on to the No. 1 ranking having attained that twice this season. Currently No. 4 in the world, Medvedev is 38-14 this year. The second seed is chasing a 15th career title in Kazakhstan. he has featured in four finals this year, including at the Australian Open, but has won just one of them and that title came in Los Cabos in August.
He has blown hot and cold recently but will look to build on the solid start at the Astana Open.

Ruusuvuori Ousts Sofia Champion
World no. 53 Emil Ruusuvuori took down last week’s Sofia Open champion Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets on Wednesday.
The expectations were high from the Swiss after his maiden ATP title, but it turned out to be a one-sided affair with the Finn calling the shots in the opening round clash.
Ruusuvuori bagelled the World no. 64 in just 25 minutes in the first set. His serve was under a bit of pressure in the first game of the second set, but he saved three break points to hold.
He wasn’t bothered again by Huesler in the rest of the match, while he broke his opponent twice to claim the contest 6-0, 6-2.
The 23-year-old is now 31-26 in 2022. He has not won consecutive ATP matches since the Washington Open where he reached the third round. Can he break that pattern in Kazakhstan?
Medvedev v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip
The shock defeat to Stan Wawrinka in Metz would have made him a bit jittery, but a splendid start in Astana would have restored his confidence. The second seed will go into the next round feeling much better about his game and that should see him ease past the Finn in straight sets.
