Maria Sakkari v Donna Vekic Head to Head

Vekic has dominated this rivalry, winning 4 and losing 2 of their six meetings.

Sakkari’s Recent Hard Court Form Concerning

Maria Sakkari will be looking to overcome last week’s Ostrava disappointment as she gears up to take on Donna Vekic in the opening round in San Diego.

The Greek, who had a first-round bye in Ostrava, went down in her opening round to qualifier Alycia Parks in three sets. Overall Sakkari has had a pretty good run this season, which has seen her reach three finals. One of those finals was played 10 days ago in Parma, in which Sakkari went down to Mayar Sherif to finish runner-up.

The World no. 7 had earlier reached her maiden WTA 1000 final in Indian Wells and a WTA 500 final in St. Petersburg, but she couldn’t claim either of those two titles. As a result of the three losses, the Rabat Open title that she won in 2019 remains her only title from six career finals.

Sakkari is 33-20 overall this year and while she did exceptionally well on hard courts at the start of the season, she has struggled on the surface recently. She was 16-6 on hard courts before the start of the clay season, but since the beginning of the North American swing, she is 2-5 on the surface. She will be hoping to recapture the early season form and start winning on consistent basis to finish the season well.

Vekic Comes Through Qualifiers

After making it to the quarterfinals in her last tournament in Tallinn, Donna Vekic has now qualified for the main draw in San Diego.

The former top 20 player, who is currently ranked no. 77th in the world, has struggled to go deep in tournaments on a consistent basis ever since undergoing a knee surgery last year.

This year Vekic is 23-18 from all levels and she has a 7-8 record on hard courts.

On the tour, the Croatian has been a quarterfinalist twice this season. One of those was in Birmingham and the other in Tallinn two weeks ago. She hasn’t gone beyond the last eight stage. Not even at the lower level where her best was a quarterfinal finish at the WTA 125 in Paris.

She made it to the main draw with straight set wins over Americans Elizabeth Mandlik and Lauren Davis in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively. Can she carry that momentum into the first round. She will feel confident going into the opening round against a player, whom she has dominated in the past.

Sakkari v Vekic Prediction and Tip

Vekic may have a 4-2 record against the Greek, but Sakkari has consistently made deep runs this season. She may have struggled on hard courts recently but Sakkari still remains the favourite to win this match and advance to the next round.
