Alcaraz Off to a Fine Start

World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz made a solid start at the Paris Masters as he knocked out Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who is chasing his sixth title of the season in the final Masters 1000 event, struck 9 aces and 30 winners on his way to a 6-4 6-4 victory.

Alcaraz was broken once in the eighth game of the first set, but he broke the Japanese twice to take the opening set. In the second, Alcaraz didn’t face a break point, while he converted one of the two that he held to advance to the third round of the Paris Masters for the second straight year.

The win improved the Spaniard to 56-14 during the terrific season, which saw his win his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open and his first two Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid.

He also won his first two ATP 500 tournaments this year and finished runner-up in two other finals, but is still looking to reach his first final since the U.S. Open. Having got into a good rhythm right at the beginning of the tournament he will now be hoping to keep the form going as he aims for another deep run.

Dimitrov Rolls Past Fognini

A day after scoring a tough opening round win over Botic van de Zandschulp, Grigor Dimitrov raised his level in the round of 32 to oust Italy’s Fabio Fognini and move into the third round in Paris for the ninth time in his 10th attempt.

The Bulgarian, who was a semifinalist in 2019, has been stopped in the third round seven times. It will be interesting to see if he can go past the third round for a second time in the tournament as he runs into the top seed this time.

But Dimitrov has shown excellent form over the last two weeks. He was a semifinalist in Vienna and pulled off a solid 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) victory over Van de Zandschulp in the first round.

On Wednesday, Dimitrov bageled the Italian in the first set. He didn’t face any break point in the set, but held 11 of them,, converting three and going one-set up.

In the second, Fognini showed some resistance, breaking back after conceding an early break. But Dimitrov got a second break late in the set to clinch the match 6-0, 7-5.
