They met once at a Challenger event this year with Arnaldi winning in straight sets.

Passaro Goes Down to Lehecka

Eighth seed Francesco Passaro went down to fifth seed Jiri Lehecka in straight sets in his opening match of the Green Group on Tuesday.

After conceding the only break of the first set, Passaro gave the world no. 74 a tough fight in the second set. He came back from a break down and then went toe-to-toe in the tiebreak. He saved three set points but couldn’t save a fourth one, going two-sets-to-love down.

In the third set, it was once again the Czech player who dominated the proceedings and took the match 4-1, 4-3 (9-7), 4-1.

The 21-year-old Italian, who was 1-3 at the tour level this year, has featured in five Challenger and two ITF World Tennis Tour finals. But he emerged victorious in just two of the, winning his first-ever Challenger title in Trieste and a World Tennis Tour title in Monastir.

He is more comfortable playing on clay than on other surfaces and may find it difficult on the second match as well.

Arnaldi Stretches Nakashima

Ninth seed Matteo Arnaldi went down fighting to fourth seed Brandon Nakashima in a two hour and 11 minute opening match on Tuesday.

The Italian, who replaced Holger Rune in the tournament, struck 11 aces and hit 36 winners in the match. He kept his chances alive by coming back from a break down in the fourth set and winning the tiebreak. But in the final set, he was broken to love in the third game and that proved to be decisive as Nakashima didn’t make another mistake in the match.

The 21-year-old Arnaldi eventually went down to last year’s finalist 4-2, 3-4 (7-9), 3-4 (4-7), 4-3 (7-4), 2-4.

Arnaldi will be ruing the fact that he missed out on four set points in the second set. He failed to serve out the set, despite holding a set point at 3-2 (40-30). Then he built a 6-4 lead in the tiebreak and still couldn’t take the set as Nakashima made a solid comeback.

Arnaldi, who had begun the season as wold no. 363, has climbed 229 places to his career-high ranking of no. 134 this week. He has featured in a number of Challenger tournaments this year, reaching his first two finals at that level.

He made an impressive start but couldn’t hold nerves in the key moments. Can he get his first win on Wednesday.

Passaro v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

Going by their performances on Tuesday, Arnaldi holds slight edge. It’s going to be a good match with more than three sets played, but eventually Arnaldi, who has a better record on hard courts, may win the contest.
