Nakashima Edges Past Arnaldi

Fourth seed Brandon Nakashima was stretched to the hilt in the opening match by world no. 134 Matteo Arnaldi before he regrouped and edged past the Italian to take the second spot in the Green Group table.

After losing the first set, Nakashima was in danger of losing the second as well, after he conceded a break in the fifth game and then faced a set point on Arnaldi’s serve in the next game. But the American was equal to his task and he not only saved the set point but even got the break back to force the tiebreak.

Arnaldi looked the dominant force in the tiebreak, building a 4-6 lead, before Nakashima took charge and went on to take the set in the tiebreak to tie the match at one-set apiece. Neither player was broken in the third set, but Nakashima went on to win another tiebreak to go 2-1 up.

It was Arnaldi’s turn to fight back in the next set. he came back from 1-3 down and then edged the tiebreak to even the contest 2-2.

Nakashima took charge of the final set though and he broke the Italian to love in the third game before going on to seal the contest 2-4, 4-3 (9-7), 4-3 (7-4), 3-4 (4-7), 4-2.

A semifinalist last year, the 21-year-old will look to build on the gritty display in the second match on Wednesday. He won his maiden title in San Diego this year and will be looking to cap off the season with another title in the under-21 year-end finale.

Lehecka Begins With a Comfortable Win

Fifth seed Jiri Lehecka got his campaign off to a great start as he defeated eighth seed Francesco Passaro in straight sets to go on top of the table in the Green Group after the first round of round robin matches.

Lehecka converted 3 of 5 break points and saved 2 of 3 to win the one hour and seven minutes contest 4-1, 4-3 (9-7), 4-1. While he had a relatively easy run in the first and the third sets, Passaro ran him close in the second set. The Italian came back from a break down and then both the players had four minibreaks each in the tiebreak, before Lehecka got the decisive minibreak to take the set.

The 21-year-old Czech, who is 41-31 across levels this season, reached two Challenger finals this year, winning one of them on clay. His biggest tour level success came on indoor court in Rotterdam, where he made the semifinals as a qualifier. He is 9-10 on indoor surfaces and sitting on top of the group.
