Musetti Stunned by Stricker

Lorenzo Musetti is the highest ranked player in the field, but a five-set defeat to Dominic Stricker in his second match of the Red Group has now put him in a spot of bother as his last match against Jack Draper now becomes a virtual quarterfinal.

Musetti and Draper are the two highest ranked players in the field and both had come into the tournament on the back of fantastic seasons. But both went down to the world no. 111 Dominic Stricker and will now face each other in a winner-takes-all contest on Thursday.

The world no. 23 Musetti is the home favourite and will be looking to bring out his A-game on Thursday. A winner in Hamburg and Napoli this year—the first two ATP titles of his career—Musetti began the ATP Next Gen Finals well, with a straight sets drubbing of Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin. But he couldn’t keep that form going in the second match on Wednesday, going down to Stricker in a nail-biting five-setter.

After losing the first two sets, Musetti made a magnificent comeback to force the decider, but just when it seemed the momentum was shifting towards the Italian, Stricker raised his level again and dominated the final set tiebreak to win 4-3 (7-5), 4-3 (8-6), 3-4 (7-9), 3-4 (6-8), 4-3 (7-3) in two hours and 27 minutes.

Musetti, who reached his first Masters quarterfinals in Paris last week, will be eager to keep his chances in Milan alive and a win could extend his season by another match.

Draper Rallies Past Tseng

Following a stunning run in 2022, Jack Draper would have expected to cap off the year with a brilliant run in the 21-and-under season finale. But he goes into the final round robin match facing elimination. A win will keep him alive in the tournament, but a defeat would send him into the offseason.

There were huge expectations from Draper before the start of the tournament, but the Briton lost in straight sets to Dominic Stricker in the opening match to make things difficult for himself. He then lost a fourth consecutive set on Wednesday, when Tseng Chun-hsin took the first set of the match, but Draper wasn’t going out easily. The lefty regrouped and bounded back to draw level and then surged to victory over the next two sets.

Draper converted 2 of 3 breaks points and saved 2 of 3 to win the one hour and 33 minute contest 1-4, 4-2, 4-3 (7-2), 4-2.

The 20-year-old struck 20 winners including 6 aces. He won 89% points on the back of his first serve and got better as the match progressed.

Draper reached his first Masters quarterfinal at the Canadian Open and was a semifinalist in Eastbourne. He also won his first four Challenger titles this year and has moved 224 places from the start of the year to his current career-high ranking of 41. Will the remarkable season end on Thursday or will he get another game to get a chance of ending the season on a high?

Musetti v Draper Prediction and Tip

Musetti is playing at home. He has been very consistent at the top level this year, his recent form is great as well and he has looked the better player in the first two matches. Expect the Italian to keep his hopes alive with a win in teh virtual quarterfinal.
