Stricker Qualifies for Semifinals

Dominic Stricker edged out the second seed Lorenzo Musetti in a dramatic five-setter to become the first player to reach the semifinals in the 21-and-under season finale.

The 20-year-old Swiss, who had defeated world no. 41 Jack Draper in the opening round, stunned the world no. 23 Musetti in a two-hour-and-28-minute contest on Wednesday.

With both players playing some outstanding tennis all five sets went into the tiebreak. Stricker edged the first, then saved two set points in the second, which proved to be huge in the context of the match. Musetti made a solid comeback effort edging the third and fourth set tiebreaks, but in the end the left-handed Swiss dominated the final set tiebreak to seal a 4-3 (7-5), 4-3(8-6), 3-4(7-9), 3-4 (6-8), 4-3 (7-3) victory.

Stricker, who hit 51 winners including 20 aces in the match, had beaten Draper in three sets in the opening match and each of those sets went into the tiebreak. So he has a 6-2 record in the tiebreaks and 6-2 record in sets as well.

Overall he has a 2-0 win-loss record that puts him on top of Group Red and he is assured of qualification.

Tseng Loses Second, Out of Semis Race

Chinese Taipei’s Chun-hsin Tseng, who went down easily to Lorenzo Musetti in the opener, won the first set against Jack Draper on Wednesday, but the Briton regrouped and turned things around quickly to win the contest. As a result of a second straight defeat, Tseng is now out of semis race, but he will be hoping to put up a brave fight in the final match against the table topper and end the season on a high.

Tseng, who beat Draper to win the Wimbledon junior title in 2018, converted 1 of 3 break points in the match. That break helped him take the first set. Draper got the solitary break of the second set and then won the third in a a tiebreak, before getting the solitary break of the fourth to seal the match 1-4, 4-2, 4-3 (7-3), 4-2.

The world no. 90 had suffered a heavy 2-4, 2-4, 2-4 defeat to Musetti on Tuesday.

Stricker v Tseng Prediction and Tip

Stricker is the man in form. All eight of his sets so far have needed a tiebreak, so he will be hoping to fix that ahead of the semifinals and win a few sets with ease. Expect Tseng to give his all in his final match of the year, bt Stricker should still come out on top in straight sets.
