Jessica Pegula v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

Their only previous match came at the 2022 US Open and Pegula had won it 6-4, 6-4. Coincidentally that was a second round match too.

Pegula Makes a Rousing Start

While Iga Swiatek and Cori Gauff are two of the pre-tournament favourites, Pegula isn’t too far behind.

In fact, at the time of writing, she is the third favourite behind Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka and the manner in which she played in her opener – and the way Swiatek stumbled a bit – Pegula will fancy her chances. Especially given she had defeated Swiatek in the United Cup earlier this month.

Pegula, who had lost just one match at the United Cup to go with her four wins, came into her opener as a 1/17 favourite and lived every bit to those expectations. The American came through for the loss of just one game, needing only 59 minutes to win it.

The world number three did face three break-points but saved all of them while breaking her opponent five times from the eight chances she got.

She now faces an opponent she had played at the same stage of the last Grand Slam she had been a part of.

Sasnovich Wins a Match Here after Four Years

The time Sasnovich had won a main draw encounter at the Australian Open was in 2019 when she overcame Anett Kontaveit to reach the third round. She lost there and followed it up with three successive opening exits at this tournament in the years that followed.

Which is why she might have been a favourite coming into this opening round encounter against Brenda Fruhvirtova but a surprise result couldn’t have been ruled out.

Which is also why, a straight-set win would have come as a huge relief for Sasnovich. She was on court for an hour and 21 minutes to overcome Fruhvirtova 7-5, 6-2 and seal her place next to Pegula.

Things weren’t always smooth sailing for Sasnovich who fell 3-1 behind in the opening set and then dropped her serve again as she prepared to serve for the opening set. She saved a further three break-points in the 11th game before finally serving it out in the next game.

The second set went to plan though and Sasnovich will now prepare to trip a pre-tournament favourite.

Pegula v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Pegula is in such red-hot form that any result other than a straight-set win looks unlikely.
