Rafael Nadal v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came at the 2020 French Open. Needless to say that Nadal won easily, dropping just four games in the encounter.

Nadal Wards off Draper Challenge

The defending champion Nadal hadn’t had the best of starts to the season and there would have been collective groans among his fans when he was drawn to face Jack Draper in the very first round.

Draper has grown immensely as a tennis player and has been seen as one of the future stars in men’s tennis, making him a huge threat for Nadal. Given Nadal’s form, having lost both his United Cup singles matches, a loss here to Draper was a distinct scenario.

Nadal did come through in the end but it took him a good three hours and 43 minutes to wear down his opponent.

The Spaniard was broken four times in the match too and made the same number of unforced errors as his opponent – 46 of them – but edged him out on the winners, getting 41 to Draper’s 35.

Things looked like they could have gone either way too when Draper broke back in the third set to level things out at 4-4 and then again when he went ahead on serve in the first game of the fourth. Nadal’s experience ensured nothing of that sort was going to happen as he won eight of the last nine games to make it to round two.

McDonald Wins a Thriller against Nakashima

Brandon Nakashima won an ATP title last year and added the Next Finals win too to his name, having achieved a career-best ranking of 43rd in the world. He entered this tournament ranked 49th and was a 1/2 favourite to carve out a victory over McDonald.

McDonald, however, looked to have not been read the script.

He took the opening set in a tie-breaker after his opponent found his serve hard to break and even it was broken early in the second set, McDonald broke it right back. Another tie-breaker ensued and again, McDonald easily triumphed to take a 2-0 lead.

Nakashima pulled one back with two breaks in the third set, He then saved two match-points in the fourth set tie-breaker before levelling things out off his fourth set-point.

An exchange of breaks early in the final set followed but just when it looked like the final set would be headed into the fourth tie-breaker of the match, McDonald broke Nakashima in the 10th game of the set to squeak past him.

Can he put up a similar fight against Nadal though?

Nadal v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Nadal was expected to be stretched by Draper and that’s exactly what happened. Here, he should have no difficulties against McDonald, winning in three.
