Jasmine Paolini v Erika Andreeva Head to Head
They have never faced off in a competitive match on the WTA circuit but did play each other once on the ITF circuit last year. Paolini won that 6-1, 6-1.

After starting out the season with a qualifying loss at the Adelaide International at the hands of Ana Bondar, Paolini lost in the second round at Hobart and then fell in her opener at the Australian Open.
This made it three losses in four matches for her coming into this one and Paolini would have been in a desperate need for a win.
That’s exactly how it went for the Italian 27-year-old, who sent Rebeka Makarova on her way in her first round victory. She won 6-3, 6-2 in a match that lasted 74 minutes.
Paolini made it count on her opponent’s second serve, allowing Makarova to win just 29% of those points, while breaking her four times in the encounter.
And now Paolini faces a second qualifier in a row, making her a favourite again against her 134th-ranked opponent.

Andreeva Aided by Blinkova Retirement
Erika Andreeva made it her first main draw win of the season when she overcame the eighth seeded Anna Blinkova in the opener here following the Russian’s retirement.
Ranked 134th in the world, Andreeva had overturned a first set loss and led 4-0 in the decider when her opponent opted out of the encounter. She won 6-7 (3), 6-4, 4-0.
A former runner-up at the French Open junior’s, Andreeva had earlier overcome Diane Parry and Viktoria Tomova in the qualifiers to make the main draw where she took on a countrywoman she has beaten before. In fact Blinkova was Andreeva’s opponent in her maiden WTA match win last season.

Paolini starts off a favourite but there is a touch of unknown about Andreeva that makes it tough for us to call out a winner here. Especially given that Andreeva has had solid returns in indoor hardcourt competitions at the lower level.
