Federico Coria v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 30 year old Argentine, and the Brazilian, who is two years younger.

Coria Wins on Challenger Tour

Coria is already a winner on the Challenger Tour this year, having recently claimed the title in Concepcion, Chile, beating the Kazakh Timofey Skatov in straight sets in the final.

He would have been glad to get back to the clay of South America, after a less than stellar month on the hard courts of Australasia.

Both his matches in the United Cup playing for Argentina ended in defeat, and, although he qualified for Auckland, he promptly lost in the first round.

The same fate awaited him at the Australian Open, where he was on the end of a five set reversal at the hands of the Hungarian Marton Fuscovics.

His win in Chile was his 14th success at the Challenger level, all of them on clay.

In terms of the main tour, the closest he has come to winning a title is reaching the final of the Swedish Open in 2021, when he lost to Casper Ruud.

He was knocked out in the first round in Cordoba last year, so will be looking to improve on that.

Monteiro Hoping to Make it Count on Favourite Surface

Monteiro, the current Brazilian number one, has reached 13 finals on the Challenger tour, all of them on clay, and has won eight of them, including two tournaments in 2022, in Austria and Italy.

Other highlights of 2022 include reaching a career high ranking, and reaching the second round of the US Open for the first time.

However, his form rather trailed off towards the end of the season, and he only made the second round of a main tour event once, and that was in Gijon.

He began his year playing for Brazil in the United Cup, and won both his singles matches, even though his country did not progress beyond the group stages.

In Auckland, though, he suffered a straight sets opening round defeat, and suffered the same hands at the Australian Open at the hands of the Czech, Jiri Lehecka.

The Brazilian got back to winning ways by beating the lowly ranked Chinese player, Jie Cui, in the Davis Cup.

Coria v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

There is very little to separate these two on paper – both are experienced competitors, especially on clay.

What may tilt the balance in Coria’s favour, is that he has the benefit of playing on home soil, and can count on vociferous local support.

It would be no surprise, though, if this match went to three sets.
