Pedro Martinez v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Garin leads their head to head series by three matches to one.

He won both their matches in 2021, on the grass of Wimbledon, and the clay of Bastad.

The Chilean also won at the Australian Open last year, but Martinez was the victor at the Miami Masters two months later.

Martinez Back on His Best Surface

Later this month Martinez will travel to Chile to defend the title that he won last year, his fist success on the main tour (although he had been beaten in the final in Kitzbuhel in 2021, and returned there to win the doubles last July).

Like many Spaniards a natural clay court player, he has appeared in 19 finals on the Challenger tour on the surface, winning ten of them.

Unlike the majority of players on the tour, he chose to start his year not in Australia, but in Pune, where he reached the quarter-finals, beating Sebastian Baez in the process.

However, he was then beaten by Aslan Karatsev in straight sets.

He did not have any more practice matches before the Australian Open, and perhaps that accounts for his showing, well beaten by the world number 10, Hubert Hurkasz, in straight sets.

Martinez reached the second round in  Cordoba last year and will be aiming to go deeper this time round.

Garin Has Won This Before

Grain’s present world ranking is not a true reflection of his ability.

After all, this is a man that was ranked as high as 17 in the world 18 months ago, and who has won five senior clay court titles, including this one in 2020, when he beat local favourite Diego Schwartzman in the final.

Indeed, had he earned the points which came with reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final last year – he eventually lost to Nick Kyrgios – he would probably have been seeded for this tournament.

That he has dropped so low, reflected his disappointing form in the second half of last season, with just two second round appearances to his name.

He began his 2023 campaign playing in a Challenger event in New Caledonia, where he was the number one seed, eventually losing at the semi-final stage to the Italian, Raul Brancaccio.

From there he travelled to Melbourne for the Australian Open, but was beaten by the American Sebastian Korda, in the first round.

He was also beaten in his Davis Cup tie with Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan.

Martinez v Garin Prediction and Tip

Although on paper Martinez may be considered the favourite as the higher ranked player and seed, it is Garin who has enjoyed more main tour success, including in this event in the past.

He will be confident of progressing past the Spaniard, especially given his superior head to head record, and beginning his climb back into the higher reaches of the rankings, where he will feel that he belongs.
