It’s been a forgettable start to the season for Baez.
The Argentine, who has never been at his best on hardcourt surfaces, has fallen to three straight opening round exits in as many tournaments that he has participated.
The clay court swing couldn’t have come soon enough for Baez. Especially for someone who has won 11 of his 12 titles across all the circuits on clay, including one ATP title last year in Estoril.
One of the top four seeds at the Pune Open, Baez had a first round bye but fell to Pedro Martinez in the second despite scooping the opening set. He was then dumped in straight sets in Auckland’s opener by Ben Shelton before Jason Kubler registered a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over him at the Australian Open.
With this kind of a start, Baez would hope he can accumulate a few wins now over the month of February as he prepares to get back to his career-best ranking of 31st on the ATP charts.

Darderi Gets Past Gaston in Opener
After fizzling out in the qualifiers of the Australian Open, Darderi quickly turned his attention towards clay – his favourite surface – and featured in the Concepcion Challenger competition two weeks ago.
There Darderi made the second round before registering back to back victories in the qualifiers of this tournament in Cordoba.
And in the first round, Darderi lived up to his favourite billing (he was 7/10 to win his opener) against Hugo Gaston. Darderi won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes to proceed to round two where he will face a sterner test.
Darderi faced just one break-point in the first set which he easily saved and while he was broken once in the second, by that time he had taken a 5-0 lead.
