Petra Martic survived a second round scare as she held off Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck in a two hour and 44 minute contest on Thursday.

The world no. 34 had an early break in the first set to lead 3-0, but she lost the next four in a row to find herself a break down against the Belgian. However, she fought back to win the last three games in a row and seize the initiative.

Neither player could break in the second set and it was eventually decided in the tiebreak. Both exchanged plenty of minibreaks but it was Van Uytvanck who edged the set and forced the decider.

The final set saw Van Uytvanck get an early break but Martic pulled it back in the middle and then sealed victory with a dominating display in the final set tiebreak.

The 32-year-old, who served seven aces in the match, ousted the world no. 76, 6-4, 6-7 (5-), 7-6 (7-3).

Martic had struck 11 aces during her 6-1, 7-5 win over Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera in the first round.

With the two wins in Linz, Martic is now 5-4 this year. She finished with a 1-2 record at the United Cup and went 1-1 at the Australian and Lyon Opens.

Tauson Rallies Past Giorgi

She found a spot in the main draw despite losing her second qualifying round, but Clara Tauson has made the most of the opportunity.

The 20-yearDane, who shocked third seed Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round, scored a come-from-behind win over Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the second round on Thursday.

Giorgi had outplayed Tauson in the first set and she also broke the Dane in the first game of the second. But Tauson clawed her way back into the match. She broke Giorgi twice to even out the contest at one-set all. In the final set, both exchanged two breaks each during the middle phase, but Tauson got the decisive third break soon and advanced to the quarterfinals. Tauson served six aces and won 75% points on her first serve to down the world no. 73, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Dane is now 3-2 this season. She had beaten Alina Michalitsch 6-0, 6-2 in the first qualifying round but lost to Rebeka Masarova 4-6, 2-6 in the second qualifier.

Tauson is a two-time champion from three WTA finals. All three of those finals were played in 2021.

Both players are coming off three-set wins which is an indicator of their resilience. Tauson’s ranked lower in the world but she will be up for it and give Martic a tough fight. Expect a close contest with Martic edgng through.
