Anastasia Potapova v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

Potapova and Friedsam will be facing off for the first time in their careers.

Potapova Edges Past Niemeier

Following a gutsy come-from-behind win over Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the first round, Anastasia Potapova survived another three setter on Thursday, defeating Germany’s Jule Niemeier and marching into the last eight.

The 21-year-old Russian saved 10 of 17 break points and converted half of the 16 that she held to beat last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

This will be Potapova’s  second straight quarterfinal. The world no. 44 had reached the last eight in Lyon but her run was stalled by Maryna Zanevska.

Can she make it to the semifinal? Potapova won her maiden WTA title in Istanbul last year. She also reached a second final and her fourth overall in Prague. So in terms of form, Potapova has been in decent touch for a while.

She is 7-5 in 2023 from all competitions and 5-3 in the main draws.

Friedsam Stuns Kalinina

Eight years after playing the final in Linz, Anna-Lena Friedsam finds herself two wins away from a second final in the tournament history and a third of her career.

The 29-year-old German, who came through the qualifiers, has won both her main draw matches in straight sets. Friedsam’s recent win came over fourth seed Anhelina Kalinina on Thursday.

Both players traded two breaks each over the first seven games of the match but it was a third break for the world no. 124 that proved decisive in the opening set. In the second set, Kalinina came back from a break down twice but once again it was Friedsam who had the last laugh as she broke for a third time in the set and sent the world no. 31 packing with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The German had beaten Sara Errani 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round. There again she was broken four times but she converted 7 of 13 break points. Friedsam had qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over Ingrid Gamarra Martins and a come-from-behind three-set win over Varvara Gracheva.

Can Friedsam keep the momentum going?

Potapova v Friedsam Prediction and Tip

Friedsam’s current form will worry Potapova a bit, but the latter has played very well over the last one year and she should prevail in this contest and reach the final four.
