Albert Ramos Vinolas v Joao Sousa Head to Head

Inclusive of all the levels – Challengers and qualifiers included – these two have had nine previous meetings and Ramos-Vinolas has won seven of them.

It’s 5-1 on clay in favour of the Spaniard with their last meeting having come at the Geneva Open in 2019.

Ramos Vinolas Finally Wins a Match

It had been an underwhelming start for Ramos Vinolas coming into this tournament with the Spanish clay-court specialist losing all his first four matches of the season.

And with a first round bye here in Cordoba, all eyes were on him how he shrugs off the lack of results and possible rustiness to tackle Dusan Lajovic, his second round opponent.

In the end, he did a fair job of that despite a second set stumble which saw him getting broken twice. Those apart, Ramos Vinolas had also begun the match with a break of serve against him but then recovered quickly to break back and clinch the opening set as Lajovic served to stay in it at 4-5.

Lajovic levelled things off by cruising in the second set before Ramos Vinolas got his own back by winning the last four games of the match and sealing his quarterfinal berth with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

Can he double his wins tally for the year now?

Sousa Stunning in Cordoba

Sousa has fallen to 162nd in the world. He failed to qualify for the Auckland Open but then made it through as a lucky loser in what was his first tournament of the season. As expected, he lost his opener there.

A straight-set rout at the Australian Open first round followed soon after.

And back to back defeats in the Davis Cup to Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka came not too long post that.

Which is why coming into this tournament, Sousa has been nearly 3/1 odds to win both his opening two rounds, against Tomas Etcheverry and Cristian Garin. And both times he has won them!

While against Etcheverry, Sousa came back from a set down to send the local player out, he was a 7-5, 7-6 (6) winner over Garin.

Ramos Vinolas is a different proposition in that he also holds a lot of experience to go with the fact that he has had a wood over Sousa. Can the world number 162 find a way to get past the Spaniard?

Ramos Vinolas v Sousa Prediction and Tip

For the third time in a row, Sousa is 11/5 underdog to win this but this time around we reckon he might have met his match. Ramos Vinolas’ superior record against Sousa makes him our pick to get past his opponent and enter the semifinal.
