Jelena Ostapenko v Katarina Zavatska Head to Head

Zavatska leads 1-0, but it’s due to their last meeting ending with Ostapenko retiring from the match after trailing 3-6, 4-5 in the 2019 Tashkent Open.

Ostapenko Struggling with Form

Jelena Ostapenko, current World No. 14, is starting in Dubai as the defending champion, but given the competitive draw, it will be challenging for her to repeat the feat.

The number 13 seed is in the same bracket as the likes of Daria Kasatkina, Barbora Krejcikova, Petra Kvitova, and Aryna Sabalenka. That wouldn’t matter much otherwise if she were at her peak, but so far in 2023, the Latvian has visibly struggled.

She is 7-5, with a quarterfinal run in the Australian Open being her sole highlight. She followed that with early exits in Abu Dhabi and Doha – respectively, to Qinwen Zheng and Jessica Pegula. The Slam was also preceded by similar results in Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2.

Overall, the 25-year-old has enjoyed a superb career with 13 singles finals and just as many in the doubles department. She did reach the final in Doha with Lyudmyla Kichenok, so it’s not been all bad.

Zavatska Clears the Qualifiers

23-year-old Katarina Zavatska is competing in the Dubai main draw as a qualifier, beating the likes of Madison Brengle and Stefania Bojica over the weekend.

This means she will now compete in her first WTA singles match of 2023 after losing in the prelims in Melbourne, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. The losses came against Erika Andreeva, Leylah Fernandez, and Rebecca Marino.

Now ranked World No. 277, Katarina is looking to take things up in 2023 by competing in WTA tournaments. Last season, she spent the bulk of the year in low-tier events building her form.

By all means, Zavatska is relatively inexperienced, with zero Challenger or WTA finals to her name. Her best result from last season stands as a runner-up feat in ITF Loule.

Ostapenko v Zavatska Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko should win this with absolute ease. However, upsets happen all the time – with Zavatska priced at 7/2 to win this one (combined with Jelena’s shoddy form of late), she may be a bet worth backing to make a good profit.
